The month of December 2020, will always be remembered as the black month of the release of Cyberpunk 2077. As such the NDP group has released the North American Sales data for December 2020, and the results are both expected and shocking.
According to reports, players spent a total of $7.7 billion on games, additional content, and hardware. That’s up 25 percent compared to December 2019.
With the release of next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft, one might easily attribute this increase to the consoles. But the supply of the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S remains severely constrained.
It allowed the Nintendo Switch to come out on top in terms of both dollars and units sold, as it reigned supreme in December sales.
But the most important piece of information is that Switch had the second-best year of any console in history in 2020, trailing only the Wii in 2008.
In terms of games though Cyberpunk 2077 received unexpectedly high reception and pre-orders it remains in second place in comparison to the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The new entry in the top ten list is Ubisoft’s Immortals Fenix Rising.
Here are December’s top 20 games according to NPD:
